Local MP supports rise in standards of care homes

Friday 28th March, 2014

Stephen Gilbert MP visited Crantock Lodge today to see a best practice example of top quality care for the elderly. The MP for St Austell & Newquay came to discuss standards within the care sector in Cornwall and got some hands on experience at the same time – by serving our residents their lunch!

Mt Gilbert said: “We need to ensure that local services meet the needs of the elderly. I came to Crantock Lodge today to see what good care looks like and to understand the issues facing the local care sector so we can improve standards for the potentially vulnerable members of our community.”

Crantock Lodge is home to just eleven private residents and prides itself on it’s top rating as awarded by industry watchdog, the Care Quality Commission. Peter & Sarah Shaw took over the running of the home two years ago and since then have sought to raise standards even further. Peter Shaw says:

“Having a customer service background, our philosophy is to treat our residents like guests in a five star hotel rather than a traditional care institution. We go out of our way to make sure that our residents have anything they want, and are cared for with dignity and respect - as we would all want to be treated ourselves. Now it’s the best we can make it, and we’re proud to show our home to anyone who would like to visit.”

Mr Gilbert continued: "We hear so much about poor practice at care institutions so it’s great to see an example of really good practice. Crantock Lodge shows that there is good news in the care sector and I’m keen to explore how we can raise standards for everyone.”

Sarah Shaw added: “We have more staff than other similar sized homes and it’s because in our view that’s what it needs to look after people properly. All our staff are local and we’re extremely proud of the way they go out of their way to make our residents happy.”

Crantock Lodge is sponsoring the Cornish Guardian Community Award for the Best Adult Carer – the winner will be announced tonight!
